This couple was following God’s teaching in getting married. It may well be that this was most in Jesus' mind; it may well be that Mark alone preserved the little phrase which means so much. Let me close in a prayer. But Jesus has come to do what you have always dreamed that your gods could do. Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing. that Herod had begun to build that wondrous Temple; it was not until A.D. 64 that the building was finally finished. Mark has it: "My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations. The New Testament uses three different words for the wonderful works of God and of Jesus, and each has something to tell us about what a miracle really is. So it was at a village girl's wedding in a Galilaean village that Jesus first showed his glory; and it was there that his disciples caught another dazzling glimpse of what he was. There is another thing we must see in all of this. In other words the money-changers made 4 pence out of him--and that, remember, was one day's wage. Jesus was like that. I don’ really see that in Richard Foster’s, Celebration of Discipline, but it wouldn’t be a bad discipline- call it remembering. Answer: The difference is this. Jesus said to her: "Lady, let me handle this in my own way. As the Revised Standard Version has it, he "manifested forth his glory," and that manifestation took place within a home. But you have made it a robbers’ den.” The chief priests and the scribes heard this, and began seeking how to destroy Him.” (Mark 11:17-18a). It’s a theme we’ll see in a moment. At what age do Jewish men take on their spiritual responsibilities? (i) We note when it happened. Below is a modified transcript. We get a confidence because He has delivered us from the past and we can be confident about what He’ll do in the future and in our present. You’re being concerned about the human and I’m concerned about My Father’s will. It was necessary that all should pay that tax so that the Temple sacrifices and the Temple ritual might be carried out day by day. That would give anything up to one hundred and eighty gallons of wine. In that sense, we have to approach Him on His terms and not on our own. I’m here to tell you I often do. This governor was very impressed with this wine. This was done with each hand in turn; and then each palm was cleansed by rubbing it with the fist of the other hand. No wedding party on earth could drink one hundred and eighty gallons of wine. Strict Jews washed the hands before a meal and between each course. So that it’s one thing to believe in Him because you see miracles but it’s another thing to see that the miracles actually point beyond themselves as signs for us to recognize who He is. The Jewish ceremonial law insisted that this should be done not only at the beginning of a meal but also between courses. Although in chapter two we do not have a discourse until after Nicodemus in chapter 3. He said to the woman of Samaria that the day was coming when men would worship God neither in Mount Gerizim, nor in Jerusalem, but in spirit and in truth (John 4:21). Almost always He answers later than I want Him to. Here’s what happened. He had a clear vision that He did not come to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. decided to build a great temple to win or earn favor with the Jews because he was regarded as an outcast. The conduct in the Temple court shut out the seeking Gentile from the presence of God. But what did Jesus originally say and what did he originally mean? Right at the beginning he shows us Jesus acting as God's Messiah must act. Some of these stones were huge. It was only when his younger brothers and sisters were able to look after themselves that he left home. In John’s account he mentions the animals and Mark just mentions the tables and so forth, then it mentions the doves. Five extra people may well have caused complications. “And in the temple”- the word that is used here is the word “hieron” not the word “naos”. They were treated like a king and queen, were actually addressed as king and queen, and their word was law. This action befitted none but the Messiah, and they were surer than ever that Jesus was in fact the Anointed One of God. I want to say that in verse 5 Jesus’ greater concern didn’t prevent Him from acting according to His mother’s unspoken question. 1. We have a confidence as well that He is leading us in a direction that will ultimately be for our highest good. I want you to see that He has sovereign authority. All through the gospel story Jesus talks about his hour. This was in fact the Passover. I lean toward it probably being two cleansings but you could go either way. Now show us some wonder which will prove your claim.". Just like you have two angels in one account that were at the tomb and one angel in the other account at the tomb. “Miracles or signs”: John used this word here to refer to significant displays of power that pointed beyond themselves to the deeper divine realities that could be perceived by the eyes of faith. Each one of these water pots had from eighteen to twenty-seven gallons each. To him home was a place for which nothing but his best was good enough. Home >> Bible Studies >> John >> John 2:1-11 These small group studies of John contain outlines, cross-references, Bible study discussion questions, and applications. When he tasted the water which had become wine he was astonished. . By this time Jews were scattered all over the world, but they never forgot their ancestral faith and their ancestral land; and it was the dream and aim of every Jew, no matter in what land he stayed, to celebrate at least one Passover in Jerusalem. That must be what Jesus actually said; but in the years to come John saw far more than that in Jesus' saying. The Passover Feast of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Jesus exploits symbols that are associated with those very events to make His own identity clear. It was to save a humble Galilaean family from hurt that Jesus put forth his power. Some would think, why would Jesus waste His time going to such an affair? You see- that’s what my prayer will be. We ought not to talk about the contradictions between the Fourth Gospel and the other three, but to use them all to get as complete a picture of the life of Jesus as possible. She told the servants to do as Jesus told them to do. So that life being in the blood becomes a key symbol then when the new covenant, in My blood, is established so that the blood becomes the life. It was in 19 B.C. According to the Jews seven is the number which is complete and perfect; and six is the number which is unfinished and imperfect. Folks in that environment would’ve been invited and very likely they ended up with more than they expected and more people hung around as well. That our zeal is to build something that will be honoring and pleasing to God but after awhile if we’re not careful, is it possible that our own identity gets so wrapped up in that thing that it becomes a projection of ourselves and yet we sacrifice supposing it’s other centered? This One, when He offered Himself actually sat down at the right hand of God having made a complete sacrifice so that there would no longer be need for any more animal sacrifices. He knows. Though we do not know exactly what that script will be or what it looks like. He sees that with more and more clarity and as it approaches He communicates that to His disciples with greater clarity. John 2:13-25, “The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. John 2:12, “After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.” We have talked in some of the other lessons how they would go to Capernaum and probably stay in Peter’s house while they were there. That’s why Jesus answered to them after they said “What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?”(v.18) He said, “ Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”(v. 19) Again we have His answers, prophetic of His death and resurrection. Jesus was perfectly at home at such an occasion. In (verses 13-25) John used this section where Jesus cleansed the temple in righteous indignation to reinforce his main theme that He was the promised Messiah and Son of God. But who can endure the day of His coming? It was not till he was thirty years old that Jesus left home; and all these years Mary lived with him. My hour has not yet come.” Some people regard that as being a little harsh. So then if there was a Gentile whose heart God had touched, he might come into the Court of the Gentiles to mediate and pray and distantly touch God. In all his gospel John never wrote an unnecessary or an insignificant detail. Scholars debate over this because you know the synoptic gospels associate the cleansing of the temple with an event just prior to or near the end of His life. I have no problem with that but what took place as years went by would be the assumption that Mary was a perpetual virgin.
